When is the best time to get your engagement photos done? Most couples we work with book their photography package about a year or so in advance of their wedding, so they have the flexibility to choose to take engagement photos during any of the four seasons. Your engagement session is a great opportunity to explore and create some unique photos that will show off a different aspect of your relationship than the photos of your wedding day. So we encourage our couples to choose the season that best fits the ideas they have for their session. Each season is different, offering a different unique landscape for outdoor photos. You could choose to take your photos during your favorite season or look at examples of engagement sessions in each season. Here are some helpful tips for engagement sessions in each season:
Fall is a classic season for photos. Bright leaves and golden sunsets make fall a beautiful time of year for photography. Fall would be the perfect season if you love nature and want to have your engagement session in a park or forest with lots of trees. We love taking engagement photos of couples hiking through the beautiful trails of Upstate New York. There are still warm days in the fall, so you have some freedom when it comes to choosing outfits. You could choose to dress cozy, or even wear a flowy dress. Some of the best colors to wear for fall engagement sessions are warm and neutral colors like tan, beige, brown, forest green, burnt orange, mustard yellow, maroon, and black. Don’t forget to add accents like sweaters, boots, or a hat. Need some inspiration for a fall engagement session? Here are some of our favorite ideas:
Are you dreaming of a winter wonderland experience for your engagement photos? Your session will be very different if you choose to take engagement photos in the winter, but some of our favorite photos were taken in the winter. There is something magical about snowflakes falling down, walking across a fresh layer of snow, and being bundled up next to your favorite person. A location with evergreen trees or a frozen lake or pond is gorgeous in the winter. You’ll need to put on some warm layers for your session. Dark, dramatic colors stand out well against a winter landscape. Try these ideas for your winter engagement session:
If you decide to take engagement photos in the spring, be prepared for beautiful new blooms and bright green grass and trees. If you get the timing right, your session can feature all of spring’s beautiful new growth. For example, flowers are blooming, trees start getting their leaves, and the grass is coming back to life. There can be a lot of mud to contend with in the spring, but if you are up for an adventure and you’re not afraid of getting a little messy, spring can be the perfect time to take engagement photos in fields or on trails. In the spring, you can wear lighter, brighter colors. Pastel colors show up nicely because of the colorful scenery and soft light. Here are our favorite ideas for spring engagement sessions:
There are so many options when it comes to taking engagement photos in the summer. The weather is warmer and there are tons of outdoor activities to enjoy. If you and your fiance love a particular summer activity, you could incorporate it into your photo session. If you’re not afraid of getting wet, we recommend having some fun at a waterfall, beach, or river. We could start your session with some adventure-style images and end by getting into the water to create something truly unique. Lightweight, flowy dresses are a great option for summer engagement sessions. For summer engagement sessions, we recommend wearing bright colors that occur in nature.
